Fallen Heros

The great thing about living in a small town is everybody knows you, the bad thing about living in a small town is everybody knows you. This week brought out the truth that we in a small town know. The people we know were doing a fine job fighting the fire and supporting the firefighters any way they could even if it was with a little prayer. When we heard that there were two firefighters killed on Tuesday, April 15th 2008, Michelle and I said "who is it we know?"
I have known Terry DeVore since he was a child. I have known his parents Bruce and Debbie for years. Even in a small town you don't always run into people on a regular ba
sis so I haven't talked to anyone in the DeVore family in a while. I want them and the community to know that you can be proud of the way your son lived his life displaying his small town values for the whole world to see.
To the Schwartz family, I didn't know John. I know his son Cody through his involvement with my son David and FFA. My dad, Orville, knew John and he liked him a lot. I know if his life wasn't cut short that we would have met and been friends, that is the way it works here.
Everywhere we live we take things for granted. Our lights come on, our food is in the store, our roads are passable, our streets are safe, and when we have a fire the firefighters respond. Ordway was evacuated and people were leaving. Terry, John, and dozens of others were heading into the danger to put their lives on the line in order to protect our lives and property. Due to the sacrifice of these brave men no other lives were lost and even more property wasn't lost. We owe a debt that cannot be paid to these men and women who fought this firestorm. Nobody enjoys a memorial service but we need to go through the service in order that we can heal as a family community. I feel honored to be able to stream the service so people can go through the grieving process even though they may be a world away.
God Bless you Terry, John, your families and your comrades in fire fighting.
John Tomky
I will stream the Memorial Service for Terry DeVore & John Schwartz starting @ 10:00 am mdt on April 19th.

Schedule correction

Hello world:

Opps I made a boo boo. I planned on having Manzanola @ Fowler Baseball on April 14th. I didn't check out the schedule well enough. Pat McGee will have the game on KTHN. Pat helped me get in this business and I don't see any reason to duplicate a game. Enjoy Pat's coverage and I will stay home and farm.

See ya,
John Tomky

Baseball

Hello World,

Baseball in Colorado has been going for a while, baseball for me gets going today. I have been busy farming so my baseball schedule is limited this year. Today we have the Limon Badgers visiting the Rocky Ford Meloneers @ 4:00 pm mdt. This should be a good game. Limon was the 2006 State Champion and Rocky Ford just missed the final 4 last year by 1 run in extra innings. This is a matchup we could see in May.

I will have 3 more games this month. April 14th I have Manzanola @ Fowler and on the 19th I have a double dip with Crowley County visiting the Meloneers. If time allows I will try to get in some district, regional and maybe even State games.

See ya,
John Tomky

Final day

Hello world,

Today is the final day of the big dance. Things didn't go the way I had hoped they would on Friday. The Hoehne Farmers boys and girls went out in the consolation round. They gave it a valiant effort but it just wasn't meant to be. The players and fans of Hoehne have nothing to be ashamed of.

Simla and Calhan fell short in the championship side of the bracket. Simla takes on Rocky Ford Ford for 3rd place. If you would have told me Wednesday that these 2 teams would be playing I would have said "in the championship game." David said "it was a tough year for unbeaten teams. Sangre de Cristo volleyball, Simla volleyball and basketball, Rocky Ford basketball and Tom Brady." Unfortunatly it puts a bitter taste into what when all is said and done was an execellent season for all the teams.

Calhan gets to play Sanford from the San Luis Valley. The Bulldogs need to keep up their intensity and tenasity that they have shown all season long. They should match up well with Sanford, both teams like to run.

I will also have Wray vs Grand Valley girls and Sedgwick County vs Paonia. So if your team didn't make it is as far as you wanted you can still keep up with the action on www.myhometeamsports.com. Action gets underway at 2:00 pm mdt.

Here is to all the players, you are winners in my book.

See ya,
John Tomky
